Classic Film, Broadway Musical Comedy Chronicles the Shenanigans of Producer Max Bialystock, as he and his Neurotic Partner
Leo Bloom Audaciously Fleece Play Investors
March 25, 2011, Dix Hills, New York – The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center and Five Towns College’s award-winning theater division will present the Broadway comedy classic The Producers April 14 through 16 at 7:30 pm and April 17 at 2 pm Tickets are $18, $15 for seniors and students.
Originally a film written and directed by Mel Brooks, which opened in 1968 to horrible New York reviews, it grew to cult status, eventually earning a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert later called it, “one of the funniest movies ever made.”
Ebert’s review reminisced about how he found himself in an elevator with Brooks and his wife, actress Anne Bancroft, in New York City a few months after The Producers was released, when a woman got in and recognized Brooks. 'I have to tell you, Mr. Brooks, that your movie is vulgar.' At this Brooks smiled benevolently. 'Lady,' he said, 'it rose below vulgarity.”
The 2001 play, based on the film which starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, who later recreated that role on screen in 2005. The play depicts the zany world of Broadway investments, as producer Max Bialystock oversells shares in his production, and then plans to close after opening night to avoid having to pay his creditors.
To ensure the play fails, he scours the country to produce the very worst play he can find – a nostalgic romp about the Third Reich entitled “Springtime for Hitler.” Mayhem ensues as diverse theatrical personalities collide amid scandal and treachery. Unlike the play within the play, The Producers ran for more than 2,500 performances, and won a dozen Tony awards.
The Five Towns College production will be directed by Bob Stern, professor of theater, and will feature a talented cast of up-and-coming actors from the Five Towns College Theatre Division.
“The Five Towns College production of The Producers is truly Broadway-caliber entertainment right here on Long Island,” said Sandy Hinden, Executive Director of the Center. “Audiences are in for a real treat with this production. It offers show-stopping music and dancing, and it’s hilarious.”
